The under 14 boys travelled to Blessington yesterday evening and secured a hard fought one point victory. In a very close encounter the boys had to dig deep and put in one of their best displays this year.
Right from the throw in this encounter was very close with both teams cancelling each other out and it was 8 mins before the games first score. Daire McBride (3-3) slotting the ball over the bar for a point. Blessington quickly answered this with a point of their own a minute later.
The Arklow backs and half backs were making it tough for the Blessington players to get decent scoring chances, Christopher O’Brien was running the show with Jay Wolohan back to his best out first for every ball.
Daire McBride was finding lots of space up in the forwards with good support play from Lestor Carroll and Ciaran O’Reilly (0-2). The score at half time was AGB 1-3 and Blessington 1-4.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first and both teams made changes in personnel early in the half. Blessington started piling on the pressure early on with a goal and a point in the first 7 minutes to widen the gap between the teams, but to Arklow’s credit they kept up their work rate and were rewarded for their efforts when Ross McBride (1-1) latched onto a save from the keeper and put the goal in the back of the net. The fact that Ross our under 12 player was marked by Blessington's tallest player makes Ross’s goal and over all contribution to the match all the more remarkable.
For the remainder of the match both teams traded scores, score of the half had to be Daire McBride’s third goal, when he followed in a shot from his brother Ross and fired home an instinctive volley. The majority of Arklow’s scores came after good passages of passing play which was needed to break through a good Blessington defence and likewise Blessington were made to work hard by the tireless running of the Arklow backs and half backs.
The final score was AGB 4-9 to Blessington’s 4-8 for a much deserved Arklow victory. Other scorers from Arklow Josh Moules (0-1), Neil O’Reilly (0-1), Sean Harris (0-1).
The boys now take a well earned break to enjoy the Seabreeze Festival over the weekend and resume training next Monday. Many thanks to all who travelled to Blessington to support the boys and to our under 12 players Ross, Cal and Tom who joined us to great effect on the night.
