The under 14 boys travelled to Carnew on Wednesday evening for a County League encounter. The boys have been in excellent footballing form of late and this continued last night as the boys secured a comfortable victory.
Both sides exchanged a couple of wides in the opening 5 mins before Arklow settled into their passing game and started putting scores on the board. Daire McBride opened the scoring with a well-taken point and John Paul Sheehan quickly added a goal and a point, either side of a Ciaran O'Reilly punched goal to leave Arklow 2-2 up on 10 mins. JP latching onto an excellent ball from Adam Forde to score his first goal of the evening. Paddy Sally was winning a lot of ball on the left and feeding good ball into the Carnew goal area.
On 12 mins Daire McBride received the ball from Paddy Sally and feed the ball quickly to Eoghan Doyle who calmly slotted the ball over the bar. Daire was also instrumental in John Paul’s second goal, finding John Paul with a high ball, which was quickly dispatched to the back of the goal. Ciaran O’Reilly then ran from deep on 20 mins to take a well deserved point to leave Arklow well in control of the game.
Carnew then pressed hard for the final 10 mins of the half, but some excellent work by the backs kept their scores to 1 point on 23 mins. Christopher O’Brien did a great job of marshalling his defence and he was helped by the great work rate and covering by the Arklow backs. Captain Neil O’Reilly also made sure there was enough players dropping back to help out the backs by leading by example and encouraging others to do the same.
Carnew came out strong in the second half and scored 5 unanswered points in the opening 5 mins. They had changed their formation somewhat and brought some of their stronger players into the play. Arklow however soon came to terms with this and started once again to play the game on their terms. Ciaran O’Reilly scored 2 goals in quick succession, the second a rocket of a shot beating the keeper on his near side. A Daire McBride point quickly followed this on 9 mins and Arklow went on to control the game for the next 10 mins or so with Daire adding another goal and a point.
Carnew rallied somewhat and pressed for some scores attacking through the middle of the field. Arklow conceded a lot of frees in this passage of play and could have been punished by more than 2 points if Carnew’s kicking had been more accurate.
With a final score of 6-7 to 0-8 the boys can be well satisfied with their evening’s efforts and well deserving of their victory. Along with our good forward play, John O’Hallaron, Jay Wolohan and Jimmy Farrell were stand out players in our excellent back lines. Jack Jameson wasn’t very busy but did pull of some fine saves when called upon and Jack Furlong and Paddy Mellon both had great games, breaking up the Carnew play and feeding the forwards. Cathal Kelleher and Callum Devereaux also travelled to help out with numbers and were needed due to injuries to Paddy Mellon and Jimmy Farrell. Both boys aquitted themselves well at this level with Cathal marking a good Carnew forward and showing he was more than able for the task.
So it was a happy bunch of player’s coaches and parents who made their way back to Arklow after an enjoyable evening s football. Many thanks to Carnew for their hospitality on the night and to the supporters who travelled to Carnew to cheer us on.
