Arklow Under 14 Girls played Carnew in the league at home on Tuesday 6th July in Pearse Park and came away with a good win on a score line of 1-10 to 1-4. The Management team were able to use all 21 members of their panel for this match. There were some very good performance all round especially by the younger members of the team in particular Ciara Forde and Annie Conroy who worked tirelessly and battled hard for every ball, there never say die attitude remarkable.

Although Carnew had 2 scores in the first 5 minutes Arklow replied with a well worked goal from the foot of the versatile Lauren Hayden after good work by Georgina Canavan. This seemed to settle the Arklow girls and from there on in they upped the tempo and took the game to their opponents in most areas of the field. Sarah Kendrink, Clionadh Byrne & Kirsty McCabe ( playing her first match for AGB) were creating havoc for Carnews defence. Sarah in particular, her attacking pace & quality passes set up Arklows full forward line with numerous scoring chances, Sinead Arthur & Marsha McCabe capitalizing on such chances with 2 lovely points each. Down the other end of the pitch Katie Furlong at centre back anchored a solid defence and was well assisted by Sena Sen, Claire Murray and Grace Fitzgerald. They made sure Carnew forwards worked hard and earned any score they would take.

Carnew started the better of the second half and were unlucky not to have a goal allowed when the referee deemed a square ball. Carnew added more pressure and were rewarded with a goal. The goal seemed to wake up the Arklow backs with Molly, Lisa, Caoimhe Aoife and Aisling working more as a unit and supporting each other on and off the ball. Arklow were making numerous changes throughout the match and introduced a number of players with Emma Deasey, Ciara Geoghan and Derbhla Young battling hard in the forward line putting pressure on the Carnew backs.

The most impressive piece of play came towards the last quarter of the match where the girls fitness started to kick in. Move of the match started in the back line with a fine clearance by Grace Fitzgerald who found Ciara Forde out on the wing…Ciara gave a fast accurate ball into Georgina who passed to Clionadh and she confidently kicked it over the bar for her third point of the game. Before the ref blew the final whistle Clionadh provided an another great point to her tally when she collected another fine pass from Georgina after some great battling by Annie Conroy to retain the ball.

Management team can be happy with the girls performance as each one gave it their all. There was some excellent inter play between the center back-mid fielders and the half forward line. Particular well done to Kirsty McCabe who made a fine debut for AGB! Training continues on Tuesday & Thursday from 5.15 to 7 in Pearse Park. This is where championships are won so it’s important all girls attend. Well Done Girls-keep up the great work!
