AGB Senior Ladies had a good win over Eire Og in the second game of the championship last night in Newtown on a score line of 4-13 to 9 points.

Eire Og were first on the score sheet while it took Arklow 6 attempts before they registered their first score. At times Arklow made it hard for themselves with poor decision making and poor finishing however there were many times throughout the match we saw glimpses of great football which reflects the real talent and potential in this squad. There were some great scores throughout the match with Captain Tanya Mc scoring an impressive 3 goals and 6 points.

Particular well done must also go to both Aine’s on the team. Aine Byrne covering every blade of grass marking her fellow county team mate Keelin and making it impossible for her to lay her mark on the game as she does so often for the county team. While young Aine O Reilly, playing only her second senior championship game at the young age of 15 caused absolute havoc in the back line for Eire Og with her speedy runs through at goal and her ability to be in the right place all the time not to mention her cute accurate passes into her fellow team mates setting them up for great scores. Aine is a great addition to the senior team this year and certainly adds strength to the forward line. Jessie Mc was her usual self in the half forward line making it very hard for County Player Niamh Kelly to mark. One of her great attributes is her ability to win the ball in the air from any angle! Jessie Scored a remarkable goal in the second half which certainly killed off any hope of a come back for Eire Og.

There was great defending and great work rate from the back line throughout the game which made scores hard to come by for Eire Og - many of their scores coming from frees rather than play. Well Done also to Becky Condron who made her first senior championship appearance for the Gers coming on the second half in goal and played a blinder with her accurate strong kickouts. One thing about this squad – they never lack commitment and effort and with that win the girls have now secured their place in the semi final of the Senior A championship. They are due to play Roundwood on the 15th of August which will decide if they top their group. Training continues Friday night at 7.30 in Ballymoney where the girls know they have a lot of work to do if they are to go on to win THREE IN A ROW!

AGB hope that Linda Dempsey, Rachel Byrne and Michelle Kinsella make a full and speedy recovery from their injuries so the panel is at full strength going forward.
