AGB’s Liz Fahy secured a replay of the Senior Cup Final against Valleymount by scoring a point to level the score in the dying minutes of extra time. Fahy kept her cool under pressure and slotted over the point from a free. AGB were up against a tough Valleymount side last Saturday who dominated to game in the first half and for parts of the second half. However, Arklow fought back from an eight point deficit in the closing fifteen minutes to level the game.
Jessie Hurley opened the scoring line for Arklow with a point but seven minutes in Valleymount found the back of Arklow’s net. After winning the ball at midfield, Catriona Byrne sped from the centre and slotted over a point. Valleymount remained dominant and very much on the attack; they hit three wides and scored a further two points. It seemed AGB couldn’t quite get a footing in the game; scores in the first half were low with Tanya McDonald registering their third point. Valleymount kept plugging away and hit over a further three points by the end of the first half. AGB were trailing by six points.
Minutes into the second half after Liz Fahy scored a point but Valleymount once again lashed the back of Arklow’s goal net. Fahy didn’t waste any free kicks awarded to her and kicked over a further two points. But this was equalled with Valleymount scoring another two. In the last fifteen minutes of the game, AGB really gained momentum and showed Valleymount a comeback performance. Forward Tanya McDonald supplied great ball into Liz Fahy who scored a goal. AGB built on this & Jessie McElheron kicked over a fine point. AGB continued to control possession with Jessie Hurley scoring a point. AGB’s defence closed down on Valleymount, leaving the side unable to register any scores. Excitement grew on the sidelines as AGB continued to close down the deficit on the scoreboard. A further point from Liz Fahy meant AGB were only trailing by a point and Jessie McElheron levelled the score with another point.
The game went into extra time with Valleymount determined to bury AGB’s chances of a win. They scored 1-03 but Arklow caught up with them in a high-speed game to close the gap in the final minutes of extra time. Check out www.arklowgaa.ie for details of the replay.
