AGB had a disappointing two point loss last Saturday in the 1st Round of the Championship against Stratford-Grangecon in a close, tight affair. The game was played out in rainy conditions in Aughrim with Stratford beating AGB 2-08 to 0-12.
Stratford opened the scoring line with hitting the back of the net two minutes into the game & registering a further point to their tally. But two points-a-piece from both Stephen Hurley & Niall Mullet drew AGB level. The early ball into Mullet proved fruitful when he slotted over another point & scores from Ivan Hurley & Mullet again stretched AGB’s lead by three points. Two frees awarded to Stratford were kicked over the bar & another from play drew the teams level once again.
Stratford's scoreboard was on the ascendancy once again when they scored a second goal but two points from frees scored by Stephen Hurley had AGB trailing by just a point at half-time.
In the first ten minutes of the second half, Stratford scored three unanswered points & then were reduced to fourteen players when one of their players was red-carded. It appeared AGB couldn’t build up strong attacking play in the opening fifteen minutes of the second half; but then Mullet & S Hurley rallied up another point each. This closed the gap to just a point however Stratford closed the game off with another point. Hard luck lads!
