AGB 3-14 An Tochar 1-09
Arklow Gers Ballymoney had a great win in the second round of the senior championship on Saturday evening in Aughrim. Having not yet tasted victory at senior level in the championship since going senior in 2006, Arklow can put that unconstructive stat behind them and look forward to taking on current county champions Rathnew in the final group game in two weeks time.
The game had a tense opening for the seasiders as the men from Roundwood took a commanding 4 point to 1 in the first ten minutes. Arklow at this stage were looking down the barrel of an early exit from the championship, however Arklow settled into the match with some fine score taking from Steven Hurley both from play and frees. Billy Manley shot over a fine long range effort and Danny O Harte ventured up field also for a rare score. AGB lead by the minimum, 0-07 to 0-06 at the break.
The restart saw some wayward attacking play from both sides but eventually An Tochar drew level. Arklow then got the first goal of the match. An adventurous run, and some good forward passing by AGB saw Allan Byrne get into a scoring position, however the corner back fortunately fluffed his lines dropping the ball short. An unmissable opening was produced for S. Hurley via Dempsey’s challenge on the Roundwood keeper outside the box and Arklow regained the lead with Hurley crashing the ball to the net. However, An Tochar responded straight away, levelling through a fine run and finish to the net from their nippy no.10. The game had really sparked into life and the next few scores were crucial.
With less than 15 minutes remaining the sides were level, and it proved to be a telling premeditated switch that saw Gers/ Ballymoney over the victory line. Substitute Philip Healy scored a goal with his first touch, and indeed with every touch he had, blazing a crucial 2-3 in the final 10 minutes, all from play. An impressive display of finishing indeed.
Other fine performances came from Andy Brennan, James Tyrrell and the evergreen Mark Ivanoff. A good display in the end from a weakened AGB side, who were missing some high profile players.
