AGB 1-08 Newtown 0-05
Arklow had a good win at home in the seventh round of the Whittle league division 1 on Saturday (8th May). A wonderful start saw Arklow three points to the good inside the first ten minutes. Newtown however bounced back with two points to somewhat overshadow AGB’s good start. This period of dominance for Newtown was only temporary as Steven Hurley crashed the ball into the net after a fine move by AGB downfield. Both teams were now in full flow but it was AGB remained in the ascendency. Just before the break Newtown were down two 14 men after two bookable fouls by the same man within two minutes. Arklow were leading at half time by 1-04 to 0-04.
The second half started with both defences on top and both sets of forwards quite waste full. However AGB’s defensive display was outstanding all afternoon with Pat Egan having a solid game. Sloppy finishing by the seasider’s could have proved costly however Newtown only managed one point during the second half with the home team tagging on three.
Overall, AGB can be happy with a good defensive display and keeping there unbeaten start but were wasteful on the attack. Apart from the scorers there were good performances from B Manley and I Hurley.
Team: J Bolger, J Tyrrell, P Egan, A Byrne, P O’Donoghue, M Kavanagh, A Minogue, M Ivanoff, B Manley, D Hurley (0-2), P. Gleeson (0-1), G Tyrrell, I Hurley, S Hurley (1-4), D O’Keeffe. Subs: D O Harte, P Healy (0-1).
