Arklow Geraldines Ballymoney played St. Patrick’s in Wicklow Town in round 10 of the Whittle Football League Division 1 on Saturday evening (29th May).
The home team started with a mild breeze at their backs but it was Arklow who started the scoring with Philip Healy fisting over a point. AGB dominated and pressed the home side in the opening minutes and doubled their lead with a nice score from Niall Mullet.
However the “saints” started to dominate possession in the middle, winning breaking ball and took the lead around the 20 minute mark. Soon after Danny Dempsey scored a point for AGB. Arklow responded with a Stephen Hurley free but helped through misplaced passing, the breeze and sloppy fouls in the Arklow defence; Pats lead at half time by 0-08 to 0-04. Only for a quality save by Jim Bolger in the 24 minute, Pats could have been comfortably in the lead.
Pats started on top in the second half and extended their lead to five early on through another free kick. However, the quality of the play disintegrated somewhat with both sets of forwards misplacing passes and dropping shots short. Pats were showing more urgency at this stage and were unlucky with another missed goal chance, this time Bolger was beaten but the post was not.
Poor challenges and scrappy play continued but Arklow raised their game upfront and after threatening the Pats lead but shooting some poor wides, they won a penalty to revive their chances. Stephen Hurley sent the keeper the wrong way and the score was 0-09 to 1-04 on 46 minutes. The teams swapped points in the following minutes but AGB spurred on by the goal, substitutions, & their defence showing more resolve, played more attacking football.
The combination of good passing between Mullet and Philip Glesson resulted in AGB taking their second goal in the 53rd minute and the lead once again. The Wicklow town outfit responded through yet more free kicks but never drew level due to crucial points from Stephen Hurley and a superb point by Andy Brennan. Arklow’s defence stood firm, bar another free, in the closing moments and Healy ensured the victory as impressively as he started it with another fisted point.
Arklow should be pleased with securing the two points up for grabs in this league encounter, but they cannot rest up as the championship is edging ever closer.
